Colloidal Silver: Some Research
Information of Interest
by Marvin Robey, researcher
Thirty years ago it was believed that disease and infections of all
kinds would soon be easily treatable very quickly, safely and routinely. Now, the
antibiotics are becoming ineffective in more and more applications and the side effects of
modern medication are alarming the general public.
For instance, the March 28, 1994 issue of NEWSWEEK featured a six
page article, "Antibiotics: the End of Miracle Drugs?" as the cover story.
"The rise of drug resistant germs is unparalleled in recorded history,"
according to this article. "Penicillin and tetracycline lost their power over staph
back in the 1950's and 1960's. Another antibiotic, methicillin, provided a backup for
awhile, but methicillin-resistant staph is now common in hospitals and nursing homes
worldwide...trying to cripple bacteria's defenses...will not do much more than buy us five
or ten years...A better strategy might be to abandon antibiotics altogether in favor of
different kinds of drugs." And so, went the article. This is not a very pretty
picture, if it is true.
One basic problem is simply that bacteria have a tremendous ability
to adapt to substances. They can and do mutate to overcome antibiotics. When the
antibiotics destroy the bacteria which are susceptible to them, they only clear the way
for the resistant bacteria to move in uninhibited.
The good news is, there is a substance now rapidly arising on the
horizon that can help with most infection problems and has no known side effects.
SCIENCE DIGEST suggested the answer back in March of 1978 in an
article entitled, "Our Mightiest Germ Fighter." This article, by Jim Powell,
stated: "Thanks to eye-opening research, silver is emerging as a wonder of modern
medicine. An antibiotic kills perhaps a half-dozen different disease organisms, but silver
kills some six hundred and fifty! Resistant strains fail to develop. Morever, silver is
virtually non-toxic."
Although colloidal silver was well-known in the 1930's, the new
excitement over it began in the 1970's when Dr. Carl Moyer, Chairman of Washington
University's Department of Surgery, received a grant to develop better treatments for burn
victims. Dr. Harry Margraf worked with Dr. Moyer and other surgeons as chief biochemist on
this project.
In his research Dr. Margraf found numerous references to silver as
an antimicrobial agent, and it has been used for hundreds of years in one form or another
to treat infection and has proven itself to be totally nontoxic at all concentrations.
Bacteria have never developed an immunity to it. Dr. Margraf developed a colloidal silver
salve, marketed as "silver sulfadiazine" that has proved to be very effective
and is now routinely used for sever burn victims. Since the primary cause of death in burn
victims is fighting infection, this new silver compound now enables these victims to heal
whereas in the past healing was difficult.
In "Use of Colloids in Health and Disease," author Dr.
Henry Crooks found that colloidal silver is highly germicidal and in laboratory tests he
found that "all fungus, virus, bacterium, streptococcus, staphylococcus, and other
pathogenic organisms are killed in three or four minutes. In fact, there is no microbe
known that is not killed by colloidal silver in six minutes or less in a dilution of as
little as five parts per million."
Colloidal silver is presently available in health food stores.
Unfortunately, the quality available to the public is sometimes in question. Although it
is often claimed that the concentration of these silver particles suspended in water is
450 parts per million, more commonly the actual concentration is much less, perhaps only
one part per million.
The best colloidal silver is produced at the molecular level. A
small D.C. current is passed through an electrolyte with silver electrodes. Minute,
molecular silver particles are drawn off of the positive electrode, having a positive
electrical charge. This electrical charge is of primary importance to healing and offering
the necessary anti-bacterial qualities. Since this electrical charge slowly dissipates, it
is important to be able to personally make colloidal silver conveniently for the sake of
freshness.
Improvements in the production of fresh colloidal silver have
brought the price down from as much as $200.00 per ounce to where it can now be
economically used for treating swimming pools and for agriculture as well as diseases
affecting humans.
Since the FDA only regulates substances not established before 1938
colloidal silver is not regulated and is accessible to the public. So, we have a powerful,
antipathogenic and healing substance currently readily available to all!
